Nutritional Medicine

Good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle is the cornerstone of any result-oriented treatment or prevention-oriented program. Physicians for Alternative Medicine offer a comprehensive analysis using blood, urine and hair testing to formulate diagnosis and discover any biochemical imbalances contributing to your condition/symptoms. Using natural chemicals and nutrients to correct key imbalances, in essence, is correcting the problem at the source, rather than use drugs to control symptoms while the underlying problems remain unchanged.

Orthomolecular psychiatry is a field of medicine that recognizes the association of certain vitamin, mineral, and amino acid deficiencies with psychophysiological problems. The approach to problems with sleep, mood, cognitive dysfunction, pain, and anxiety may involve assessment and appropriate dietary and supplement recommendations.

Herbal Medicine

Various herbal formulations are utilized, often in combinations, to address the medical, biochemical, neuro-cognitive, and neurological problems including metabolic conditions, hormonal imbalances, sleep disorders, chronic pain, anxiety, and mood disorders. These treatments can often be taken together with most pharmaceutical treatment protocols and may eventually allow the patient to reduce or eliminate certain pharmaceuticals.

Neurophysiology

Neurophysiology is an area of health care involved with understanding the interaction between the brain and the rest of the body in maintaining or restoring health. During the past twenty years, our understanding of the complex inter-relationships of the central nervous system, autonomic nervous system and immune system has grown immensely. It is now more generally accepted that virtually all illness is influenced, to varying degrees, by neurophysiology. Neurophysiological interventions help to provide a comprehensive, complementary, and integrated treatment program.

Neurotransmitter and Neuroendocrine Testing

Neurotransmitter and neuroendocrine testing with urine and saliva collected at home and shipped for laboratory analysis is now available. This testing provides invaluable information regarding brain chemistry and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal glandular function. The analysis guides the prescription of nutriceuticals such as amino acid/herbal medicine formulations to treat a multitude of medical problems including fibromyalgia, hypertension, migraine headache, sleep disorders, irritable bowel/spastic colon, chronic fatigue, ADD/ADHD, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, head trauma, parkinsonism, dementia, Tourette’s syndrome, and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Electromedicine – Pain Management

Microelectrotherapy is a low level current form of electromedicine. It is a non-drug, non-invasive, well tolerated treatment utilized to treat acute and chronic pain conditions. This form of treatment works differently in the body than a TENS treatment. It provides carryover pain relief and aids in the reduction of inflammation and healing of tissue damage. It provides pain relief through the stimulation of beta-endorphin activity (the body's natural pain relief substance) and the normalization of intercelluar electrical activity. It is also utilized as a treatment for scar tissue, high blood pressure, macular degeneration, tinnitus, Raynaud’s disease, and insomnia. A particular application called CES, which increases the production of serotonin activity, can be very beneficial in the treatment of anxiety, depression, bi-polar disorder, explosive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and alcohol and substance abuse problems.

Neurotherapy – Biofeedback Therapy

Neurotherapy is a specialized form of biofeedback that involves assessment and training of EEG for neurological disorders or conditions that appear to affect EEG activity. Biofeedback can also involve EMG assessment of muscle activity for neuromuscular disorders and neuromuscular retraining as well as assessment and training of a person's autonomic nervous system. Biofeedback is a way to " listen in on " or "see" various kinds of physical activity taking place in our bodies. Sensitive, battery operated monitors register this biological activity and "feed" the information back to the individual through audible and visual signals. Other treatment modalities include, hypnotherapy, neurolinguistic therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, stress management, attention training, deep relaxation training, imagery, and lifestyle management.

Neurophysiological strategies are based upon the belief that the patient should be an active participant in their healthcare management. These strategies facilitate personal empowerment in the face of often difficult and challenging health conditions. A person learns to maximize their inherent healing potential through personal responsibility for wellness-oriented activities such as the use of self-regulation. As an example, individuals utilize biofeedback training together with instruction on how to develop their ability to become more aware of what is happening in their bodies. This instructional strategy is called attention training and it teaches a person how to "pay attention" to their body in order to feel the changes that contribute to many different kinds of physical symptoms. As you work with the feedback and attention training process, you will learn how to utilize this information to self-regulate your body, thereby minimizing the effects of various medical conditions and, in many cases, preventing the manifestation of physical symptoms. This is possible with the proper amount of training and continued home practice. Actual time in treatment can vary from two to six months with weekly appointments. Follow-through at home is essential to your progress.

Stress Management

Numerous studies have demonstrated the role that stress plays in contributing to illness and chronic pain problems, as well as, the importance of stress management to facilitate healing. Strategies such as guided imagery and visualization have been shown to positively influence the immune system and thus have a role in the treatment of chronic illness. Research has also documented the importance of addressing adjustment issues associated with illness and injury as well as psycho physiological depression and anxiety. Managing stress at Physicians for Alternative Medicine is a unified effort from our medical, nutritional and psychophysiological professionals.

Healthy Heart Program – Oral and Intravenous Chelation

Dr. Volpe and her professional team at Physicians for Alternative Medicine, P.C. offer a unique program devoted to the natural treatment of cardiovascular disease. This is a comprehensive program that combines lifestyle management, diet and nutrition, exercise prescription, stress management, mind-body medicine, heavy metal detoxification, oral and intravenous chelation therapy together in one customized program. This state of the art program offers true alternative treatment to many patients with circulatory disease hoping to avoid surgery.

Cognitive Therapy for Head Injuries

Our team of highly trained professionals offers a support program for the unique needs presented by head injury sufferers. This program includes counseling, neurofeedback and psychophysiologic therapy.

Condition Specific Intravenous Drips

Intravenous nutrition guarantees that critical vitamins and minerals can bypass barriers to absorption and penetrate deeply into cells to promote repair and efficient metabolism. Additionally, intravenous chelation therapy speeds heavy metal detoxification and reduces the body’s free radical burden.

Chelation Therapy

Chelation therapy is a safe, effective and non-invasive approach to ameliorating (amending) the effects of arteriosclerosis and poor circulation.

The word CHELATION derives from the Greek word chele, which is the claw of a crab or lobsters. Chelation is thus the natural process of a pincer-like binding of metallic ions to the chelating substance.

Just two examples of many natural chelating agents are:
Hemoglobin
Chlorophyll

Synthetic chelators include:
Household detergents that prevent "ring around the bathtub."
The synthetic chelator, EDTA (ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetic acid), an amino acid, is used in chelation therapy.

HOW CHELATION WORKS
The EDTA pulls abnormal metal ions out of the body, reducing the production of free radicals. A free radical is an oxygen molecule with an odd number of electrons in an outer orbital ring of one of its atoms. This characteristic makes the free radical violently reactive with almost any and every cell structure, leading to damage and eventually to degenerative disease processes such as arteriosclerosis. By significantly reducing these reactions, chelation therapy allows the body to heal itself and reverse the disease processes.

Our goal is to help you with making permanent lifestyle changes-healthful food choices, increased physical activity, and wise use of specific foods, medications or dietary supplements.
We believe that for you to obtain success in weight loss or overcoming any nutritionally related condition, for which you are seeing us, it will take more than one session. For the most part, as you did not gain weight overnight, you should not expect it to be lost overnight. We ask you to commit to 10 sessions. The more often we interact, the better your chances are for long term success.

Upon your first visit you will be asked to provide us with information about your health and diet. These intake forms help us to assess various aspects of your dietary habits, medical conditions and lifestyle. You may also receive a physical, laboratory work up, body composition analysis and meet with the nutritionist. Your interaction in this visit will be with the medical staff, medical technician and nutritionist. By the time that you complete the session with the nutritionist, the medical team will collectively decide which program is appropriate for you.

Since the Center believes that a minimum of 10 sessions are needed to make a lasting change, we have planned each session to be personalized, yet cover specific topics and utilize time tested techniques in achieving lasting weight loss. These include utilizing goal setting, food diaries, menu selection, cooking tips, meal patterning, the use of meal replacement shakes or bars, the use of medications, assessment of changes in habits or body composition, monitoring of health parameters, transitional diets, incorporating fitness activities, and much more.

With over 20 years in medicine, nutrition and weight loss, our program can empower you for long-term success. Our staff is dedicated to assist you in every way to improve your level of health and well being while you lose weight.
